Chef Shane Whiddon
December 5, 1979 – August 24, 2017

In response to the tragic shooting last Thursday at Virginia’s on King, we at the SCRLA plan to make a memorial donation to honor Shane in coordination with the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association. If you would like to make a donation by credit card, please click on this link. We ask that you submit any donations by Friday, September 1. If you prefer to write a check or make a pledge, also please do so by Friday. Any amount would mean a great deal.

Thank you very much.

In Memoriam

Shane was born in Brunswick, Georgia, and his love of cooking started early. He had a true appreciation for the ritual of baking bread, which was instilled in him by his grandmother’s passion for providing meals that created memories.

He graduated from Glynn Academy and completed a number of apprenticeships in the culinary world.  Chef Shane has many chefs and friends that have helped and mentored him throughout his career.

After being with the Charleston Grill, he spent six years with the Sea Island Company, becoming Chef de Cuisine for Colt & Alison at the Lodge, and then joining Virginia’s on King.

Shane’s absence will be felt keenly in the industry, where he had established a respected and growing reputation as a chef and manager.

His attention to detail, creativity, energy, and sheer love for food prepared not only for sustenance, but also for celebration, marked him as one of the emerging stars in the Charleston food scene.

Firmly rooted in his faith, Shane took every opportunity to use his cooking skills to help worthy causes including;  “Feed the Need”, “Palmetto Goodwill”, “Hogs for the Cause” and others.

Shane’s greatest creation was not made in the kitchen, but in the family created with his beloved wife of ten years, Shannon.  They and their two boys loved time spent outdoors in the Lowcountry waters, exploring the community, and celebrating their faith.  More than anything, Shane loved spending time making memories with his boys and enjoying life with Shannon; his mother, Linda; and sister, Rachel.
